The Home Run Readers project obtained SVI certification. It was found that every NT$1 invested yielded NT$8.99 in social value—the highest return of any SVI-certified project in the educational field.

Our five areas of welfare focus: charity, anti-drug awareness, sports, education, and arts and culture

Through our years of engagement in these domains, we are proud to have developed significant capacities for identifying social needs, organizing campaigns of empowerment, and uniting diverse and divergent groups—together allowing us to create virtuous cycles.

Social welfare expenditure
CTBC actively invests in social welfare projects. In 2022, it invested over NT$800 million in charity, anti-drug awareness, sports, education, arts and culture, emergency relief, and economic and trade development efforts.
Charity
Over the past 38 years, the Light Up a Life charity fundraising campaign has raised more than NT$2.7 billion and helped more than 670,000 people, raising more than NT$100 million every year for each of the past 17 years.
Anti-drug awareness
Since its establishment in 2014, the CTBC Anti-Drug Educational Foundation has run successful anti-drug advocacy campaigns, reaching more than 910,000 people as of the end of 2022.
Sports
The Home Run Readers project obtained SVI certification in 2022. It was found that every NT$1 invested generated NT$8.99 in social value—the highest SROI of any educational initiative certified by SVI.
Social return on investment

In 2017, we introduced the social return on investment (ROI) system to quantify the social, economic, and environmental value of our various projects, in turn helping us optimizing the utilization of our resources.

In 2017, the Taiwan Dream Project, which provides companionship for young children in rural communities, selected Dahu Community, Pitou Township, Changhua County as its first demonstration site and the assessment target. Quantitative data was used to present social values, and certified to follow the SROI standards by the Social Value International (SVI). The project resulted in a NT$4.26 social value for every NT$1 investment in the Dahu community, which was the first SROI report by a financial industry operator certified by SVI.

In 2018, it was found that every NT$1 we invested in the CTBC Brothers pro baseball team generated NT$17.59 of social value. Not only were the CTBC Brothers the first baseball team to be certified by SVI, but the social return calculated is also the highest SROI the organization has found for any sports-related investment.

In 2019, the Dreams Initiative Project became Taiwan’s first SROI assessment in the field of arts and culture. For it, SVI found that NT$4.18 of social value was generated for every NT$1 invested in the program.

In 2021, an SROI analysis was conducted for the CTBC Black Panther Pennant and found that every NT$1 invested generated NT$12.49 in social value. It almost marked the first SROI analysis conducted by Social Value International on baseball education.

In 2022, the Home Run Readers project obtained SVI certification. For every NT$1 invested, the project was found to generate NT$8.99 in social value—the most of any SVI-certified project in the education field.

  • We partnered with National Taiwan Normal University to set up the CTBC Center for Addiction Prevention and Policy Research, working with prosecutor's offices, medical institutions, and nonprofit organizations to advocate deferred prosecution for Category 2 drug offenses.
  • We assist the Ministry of Justice's Agency of Corrections in recruiting childcare professionals for female prison wards throughout Taiwan to strengthen the parenting education and child development treatment courses for women inmates. In 2022, the program helped 115 women inmates, 115 families, and 115 children across Taiwan.

CTBC Bank is a strong supporter of baseball, with our efforts aimed at the sport’s sustainable development. CTBC Holding, in fact, is the first enterprise in Taiwan to sponsor and invest in all levels of baseball, from the youth leagues (U12, U15, and U18) to the senior (including U23) and professional levels. By providing sponsorships and organizing events, we are steering Taiwan's national pastime from strength to strength. And our investment in sports doesn't stop with baseball. We also have a long-running relationship with golf, particularly the women's game, helping to nurture rising talent and support others competing at the highest level. In 2021, CTBC Holding further expanded its influence in social welfare through sports by establishing CTBC Sports Entertainment Co., Ltd., which manages the New Taipei CTBC DEA basketball team in the T1 League. Named after the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the team hopes to use sport to reach youth with its anti-drug abuse message. In addition, in 2022, we sponsored the CTBC Flying Oyster professional esports team, to build a positive brand image among younger people.

  • We sponsor the CTBC Brothers baseball team, which won the CPBL championship for the second consecutive season in 2022, with young players showing off the results of their training. During the pandemic, the CTBC Brothers baseball team focused on cultivating their presence in the community and media. In addition to having the most followers on official social media channels among the six teams, their total views on official channels during the 2022 season surpassed ten million.
  • We sponsor the CTBC Black Panther Pennant—Taiwan’s largest youth baseball tournament. In 2022, the team traveled to Penghu to conduct the first "CTBC Black Panther Flag Tour" baseball talent cultivation and education promotion event. To date, the event attracted approximately 2,800 participants.
  • In 2022, CTBC Bank sponsored 8 skilled and promising women's golf players.
  • The 2022 CTBC Invitational saw 64 women golfers from Taiwan, Japan, and Thailand compete for the grand prize of NT$1 million, with the results also counting toward world rankings. The three-round event drew more than 2,000 spectators, and the 1,358 people in attendance on the final day marked the largest single-day crowd in the Kaohsiung Golf & Country Club’s history.
  • We sponsor the New Taipei CTBC DEA basketball team in the T1 League. The team aims to use sport to reach younger people with its anti-drug abuse message. In the 2021-2022 season, our home arena, Xinzhuang Sports Stadium, was voted "the most fun home arena" and our team had the largest number of followers on social media among all T1 League teams.
  • We sponsore the CTBC Flying Oyster esports team in January 2022 to take part in the League of Legends Pacific Championship Series. The team came second in the competition’s spring games and won the championship in its summer games, thus qualifying for the League of Legends World Championship.
  • Since 2016, CTBC Bank has held the annual Home Run Readers activity in collaboration with the CTBC Brothers, the New Taipei CTBC DEA basketball team and the National Public Information Library, encouraging participants to read in exchange for baseball and baseball tickets as part of the "reading × sports" public advocacy movement. As of Dec. 31, 2022, the Reading × Baseball initiative has partnered with 128 libraries and mobile storytelling vehicles in 17 counties and cities across Taiwan, with over 1,157,495 participants, over 140,000 books borrowed from public libraries, and 53,942 baseball game tickets given away.

We firmly believe that education provides people with opportunities to change their lives. In 2015, with the educational philosophy of supporting underprivileged and deserving students, Taiwan Lottery funded the establishment of CTBC Business School and offered scholarships and bursaries to students with excellent results or students who are economically disadvantaged. Through industry–academia collaboration and study abroad programs, the school ensures its students are prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation, as it aspires to be the most practically oriented business college in Asia and to cultivate new generations of leading international bankers. To deepen its involvement in educational welfare, Taiwan Lottery founded the CTBC International Experimental Education Foundation in 2020 to support the establishment of CTBC International Academy, the first experimental senior high school in southern Taiwan. For details, refer to the CTBC Business School official website at www.ctbc.edu.tw

  • As of the end of 2022, CTBC Business School had enrolled 167 public welfare students and issued 951 Hope Bursaries totaling more than NT$84.26 million. The school has also established the Elite Scholarship to attract outstanding high school students, awarding nearly NT$14.5 million in scholarship funds in 2022.
  • The school fosters industry–academia collaboration. This includes inviting senior CTBC Holding managers to deliver lectures as well as cultivating student leadership through career experience sharing, industry trend analyses, and more. Senior managers are also invited to serve as guest lecturers in the school every semester to share their real-life experiences with students.
  • The employment matchmaking rate of the 2022 graduates from CTBC Business School was 99%. Cumulatively for the school’s four graduating classes so far, 207 graduates have gone on to work at CTBC Holding or one of our subsidiaries.

CTBC Bank regards arts and culture as an invaluable cultural investment. Acting on its commitment to bringing art into public life, CTBC Holding donated funds to establish the CTBC Foundation for Arts and Culture. For details, see its official website at www.ctbcculture.org.The foundation’s projects include the following:

  • The CTBC Arts Festival is the only arts festival of its kind in Taiwan to promote the exchange of domestic and international art and culture through high-quality programming. In 2022, the CTBC Arts Festival focused on contemporary performing arts. A featured selection of domestic and international programs spanned diverse genres, such as cross-disciplinary theater, new circus, and dance. Furthermore, it also introduced the first "Objects in Theater" NFT, launching exploration of the limitless possibilities of performing arts in the metaverse. Moreover, nearly 400 socially disadvantaged students from more remote areas were invited to the National Concert Hall to enjoy the programs of the international festival.
  • The CTBC Foundation for Arts and Culture is dedicated to promoting contemporary art, and the inaugural edition of its CTBC Painting Prize received 790 entries—the most of any competition in the field. The accompanying art exhibition received 12,057 visitors and four award-winning artworks were put on display at CTBC Financial Park to use our corporate stature to continue promoting the arts.
  • The Dreams Initiatives Project supports arts and culture education in remote areas. The project collaborates with arts instructors to create customized education programs for rural schools. It was awarded the Arts Education Contribution Award from the Ministry of Education and the Gold Prize in the Social Inclusion category of the Taiwan Sustainability Action Award in 2022, and has cumulatively won 25 domestic and international awards and benefited 2,412 people.
  • To develop new talents for Taiwan's theaters, we co-organized the inaugural NTT+ × CTBC Musical Talent Cultivation Project with National Taichung Theater in order to develop a one-stop platform for cultivating musical talent. Six performances of two productions were staged in its first year, with nearly 1,000 tickets sold.
